questions?

How do I know which class is right for me?

It depends on your own particular needs and fitness goals. The variety of classes and approaches by the instructors gives you lots of options -- and your first class for any of the class offerings is free. So try them out and find your spot!

Do I need my own equipment?

No. You are welcome to provide your own equipment but most of the equipment you will need for class will be provided on site.

What kind of shoes do I need?

Shoes are required for three types of classes: all River Fitness classes, Water Aerobics and  Noon-time Aqua Motion. Shoes in these classes provide traction, support and protection for your feet. You may use any kind of aquatic shoe that works best for you. Many of our students prefer to support local businesses. Locally, Back of Beyond off Winslow Way or the Sport Haus in Poulsbo often carry a variety of options that will work for aquatic fitness classes. Online, many students use SwimOutlet for their shoes. You will want shoes that fit comfortably and securely -- shoes that “tie” with laces may pose a problem as the laces can come loose in the water. Aquatic shoes typically use velcro or elastic “laces” to address this problem.

How does the exercise pass work?

Super easy. Just purchase your pass from the front desk at the Aquatic Center. Note: You will need an exercise pass to attend classes. A swimming pass is not the same as an exercise pass. A one-time exercise pass will cover any class you may wish to attend. The Aquatic Center also makes multi-use passes available. With these passes you scan your card at the front desk (or at the Guard House if your class is early morning or evening when the front desk is closed.

Exercise Pass Rates:

10 Times Pass    Seniors -- $50       Adults -- $60

20 Times Pass    Seniors -- $82       Adults -- $110

For more information about rates and other pass specific questions, contact the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center at 206.842.2302.

Why are River classes limited to 10?

Our river is a wonderful workout medium -- but it is a restricted space. We have found that classes with more than 10 people are too crowded to give everyone a satisfying workout experience.

Will working out in the pool help me lose weight?

Yes,  like any other regular exercise program, working out in the pool is beneficial to building muscles, endurance and burning those calories away.

Why use equipment in a water workout?

Good question--quick answers are to build strength, endurance, and bone mass.  Equipment makes the most of water’s natural properties to give us a better, more well-rounded workout.

What are the basic moves in water aerobics and the river?

If you’re new to water aerobics, mastering some of the building block moves will help insure you get the workout you’re looking for. Form is more important than speed, so it’s worth the effort to try and get these right.  Ask your instructor to demonstrate them (Cross Country Ski, Rocking Horse, Lunges, Diagonal Jumping Jacks, Bullfrog, Mermaid) before or after class.

What else do I need to bring?

Water! Sounds odd since we are in a pool completely surrounded by the stuff, but you will get dehydrated during cardio exercise no matter what the medium. Bring a plastic or metal water bottle (glass is prohibited in the pool area).

Who benefits from working out in the water?

Just about everyone. The water is a healing, invigorating environment that will help you build strength, endurance, flexibility and balance. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, preparing for your next triathalon, or just want to be more fit, the pool is a great way to start!

Do I need to be able to swim?

No, most classes are in shallow enough water that you won’t need to swim. Deep water aerobics classes are held in the dive tank and require flotation gear (which is provided for you). Even if you can’t swim you can participate in the deep water classes provided you are comfortable with the water.

How many days a week should I workout in the water?

This depends on your personal goals and availability. Many students attend a class 4 or more times a week.

Can pregnant women workout in the water?

Yes, many find the aquatic environment a good way to relieve the stress the extra weight puts on the joints. You will want to monitor your progress with care and consult with your physician. It is recommended that women in the third trimester refrain from full submersion of the trunk (to the shoulders).

What should I wear?

Most students wear swimsuits or workout clothing designed for the aquatic environment. You  should choose apparel that fits comfortably, feels secure and will provide the coverage you would like for exercise.

AEA Certified -- what it means and why it’s important

Several of the aquatic fitness instructors at the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center are AEA certified professionals. Certification means that your instructor has studied physiology, body composition and its response to exercise in an aquatic environment, health and fitness, and needs of special populations. This is a rigorous process usually taking more than a year to complete. The internationally recognized authority on aquatic fitness and for certification is the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA).  Many workout facilities do not require any instructors to hold certifications in order to teach. A distinction of the Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center is that so many of our aquatic fitness instructors are certified by the AEA or other professional organizations.
